Day 14: Cathy Hussey, Principal (English Bluff)

September 24, 2012

In August I asked the staff at English Bluff what would happen if we changed the format of a traditional Meet the Teacher Night to an event where we accomplish our goals of meeting our families, but also had a great deal of fun? Ever the enthusiastic bunch; the EB staff jumped on board and planned The Amazing Race for our families.

Thursday, September 13th was one of those classic, sunny, late summer days in Tsawwassen. Anticipation was high as our staff arranged their stations, hung signs and tied-up balloons.

I admit, as I gazed out at the fun-filled field, I was a little nervous that no one would show. But, I had no need to have these jitters. Our families came in droves, eager to participate and reconnect with friends. (Sorry EB families… I should have known better.)

At the sound of the snare drum, families launched themselves into a variety of activities designed to challenge, entice and induce giggles. Teams had to move quickly to complete the required nine stations in thirty minutes. Despite fierce competition, the field was filled with laughter and bustling with activity.

At 7:15 our snare drum signaled the end of the Race and teams eagerly gathered for results. One family won the quickest overall time, another for best costume and the last prize was a random draw.

Did we meet our goal? When I asked our community, I heard a loud and resounding “YES!”

I agree, the Challenges were fun to work through with the family, and we were all able to reunite with staff and families throughout the evening. Thanks for a great event.
