Day 22: Five Idea Friday!

October 5, 2012

Welcome to our weekly instalment of Five Idea Friday!

1. Parent Engagement in Education Round Up:   “Experts agree that parent involvement in their children’s education is one of the biggest predictors of student success. We’ve compiled a list of articles, videos, and other resources to help you engage in a productive way with your kids’ teachers and school.”

2. Incredibox: This one is on the fun side! Incredibox is a site that lets you build your own beatbox beats! A great way for kids of all ages to play with rythym and music creation.

3. Genius Hour: There are a number of school districts where teachers provide students with time to pursue topics of interest. Many of these are based on the Google 20% model where some Google employees get up to 20% of their work time to play with ideas of their choosing. Many of Google’s innovations come from this 20% time. Here’s Surrey Teacher Gallit Zvi talking about implementing Genius Hour with her students.

4. Burlington High School Help Desk. Burlington High School in Massachusetts has a interesting approach to technology support. They have a class for high school students called BHS Student Help desk. They respond to immediate tech needs as well as write reviews of new technology tools and websites. Here’s the blog; a “student run genius bar.”

5. Happy World Teacher’s Day!
