Day 24: Tiana G, Student (Delview Secondary School)

October 10, 2012

Coming to high school there were two things I was excited about; lockers, and Thanks For Giving.

Now being in Delview for three years, I couldn’t care less about lockers, they’re just another thing to keep clean, but for two months of the year Thanks For Giving is a huge part of my life.

Almost all students and staff at Delview participate in Thanks For Giving. Whether it be canvassing North Delta, helping with the craziness of the sorting room, or just volunteering in general, it brings the school together in a way most high schoolers outside of Delview never experience.

This is Thanks For Giving’s 20th year, and over the past 19 years we have raised over 200,000 non-perishable food items for Deltassist and the Surrey Food Bank. Every year the students go out and collect over 10,000 cans in one night. The record was set in 2008, with 16,155 cans being collected. This year Thanks For Giving is extending its boundaries to knock on doors that have never been visited by this amazing event, in hopes to surpass this record.

I think what really sets this event apart from other food drives, and makes it BC’s largest single day food drive is quite simply the time of year. Everyone holds food drives around Christmas, but Thanks For Giving is held in October, right after back to school. After buying school supplies, paying fees, and back to school shopping in general, families who rely on food banks need food more than ever, and that is what Thanks For Giving is here to do.

Tiana is a grade 10 student at Delview Secondary School.

I’m also excited about tomorrow night and a little nervous about trying to break the record, but it’s alright if we don’t. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Tianna and if anyone wants to bring in non-perishable food items, whether it’s 1 bag or a truckload, feel free to visit us at Delview in the next couple days!

Tiana, congratulations on being part of such a terrific school-wide initiative. I’m sure it feels good to contribute to those in the community who are less fortunate and I’m sure you have a greater appreciation for the luxuries you have available to you. Thank you for sharing how your own perspective has changed during your time at Delview. Best of luck with your school year!
